How to remove a password from a PDF you can open
Bank statements, payslips and tax documents often arrive locked with a password. Typing it every time gets tedious, and many tools can't work with protected files. Unlock PDF saves a copy without the password. You need to know it: nothing is guessed or cracked.
Step by step
- 01
Open Unlock PDF and add the file
Drop the protected PDF. If it needs a password to open, you'll be asked for it.
- 02
Enter the password
Type the password you use to open it. If the file opens but won't let you print or copy, no password is needed.
- 03
Unlock and download
Download the copy. It opens without a password, and printing, copying and editing restrictions are gone.
Two kinds of PDF password
- An open password (also called a user password) is needed to view the file at all. Unlock PDF removes it when you enter it, or the file's permissions password.
- A permissions password (owner password) lets the file open but blocks printing, copying or changes. Unlock PDF removes those restrictions without asking for a password.
If it says the password isn't right
- PDF passwords are case-sensitive, so check capitals and Caps Lock.
- Look at the email or letter the file came with. Banks often explain the format, such as part of your name followed by your date of birth.
- For Indian documents, see the formats for e-Aadhaar, income tax PDFs and bank statements.
- A few uncommon kinds of encryption can't be opened and show the same message.
Only for files you're entitled to open
Remove passwords only from documents you have the right to open and change, such as your own statements. Unlock PDF can't recover a password you don't know.
Keep the unlocked copy safe
Anyone who gets the unlocked copy can open it. Store it somewhere private, and if you need to send it, add your own password with Protect PDF. The password you enter is used only for the job and removed from our records when it finishes.
