How to split a PDF into separate files or pages
Split PDF does two jobs. Extract pages copies the pages you list into one new PDF. Split into parts cuts the whole document into separate files every few pages; with one page per part, every page becomes its own PDF.
Step by step
- 01
Open Split PDF and add your file
Drop the PDF you want to split.
- 02
Choose Extract pages or Split into parts
For Extract pages, type the pages you want, such as 1-3, 8. For Split into parts, choose how many pages go in each file.
- 03
Split and download
Extracted pages download as one PDF. Parts download together in a ZIP, each named after its pages, such as pages-1-5.pdf.
Extracting pages
- Separate pages and ranges with commas: 1-3, 8, 10-12.
- Pages come out in the document's order, whatever order you type them in. To change it, use Rearrange pages on the result.
- A page listed twice appears once.
Splitting into parts
Choose the number of pages in each file. With 5, a 23-page document becomes five files: pages 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-23. With 1, every page becomes its own PDF.
Splitting at chapters of different lengths
Parts are all the same length. To split at chapters, run Extract pages once for each range, for example 1-4, then 5-12, then 13-30.
Removing a few pages instead
If you want to keep most of the document, it's easier to remove the pages you don't need with Delete pages. See how to delete pages from a PDF.
Questions
- Does splitting reduce quality?
- No. Pages are copied as they are, so text, images and links are unchanged.
- Can I split a password-protected PDF?
- If it needs a password to open, remove it first with Unlock PDF, as long as you know it.
- How do I put the parts back together?
- Use Merge PDF.
